Dear SPS Community,

We are off to a great start in 2018!  After a very short first week back, we are thrilled to be having a full week of school this week.  Below please find some important information and recognitions.

Recognizing Student Success and Kindness

I had the pleasure of moderating the Geography Bee Finals at ECMS this week and I congratulate our 2018 Champion, Gabrielle Fenton and our finalists Luke Trevisan and Melanie Sciametta.  All three finalists did a fantastic job of responding to the final round questions and showed amazing calm under pressure as an auditorium full of their peers cheered them on.  As always, I was so proud of how supportive and respectful the students were during the event.  I love seeing how kind and encouraging our students are at events such as this.

Recognizing Staff and Town Partners

I would like to publicly acknowledge and express appreciation for the relentless efforts of SPS custodians, Sudbury DPW, and Sudbury PD during the recent snow event.  We are so fortunate to have so many people who work hard and collaborate to keep our students, staff, and families safe.  We are in constant communication during storms so that we make informed decisions in the best interest of our students and the community.   Let’s hope for a continuation of this “balmy” weather we are experiencing today!

Teaching and Learning Presentation

This year we were asked to provide a one-night State of the School (SOS) presentation to School Committee.  Much thanks to the following SPS educators who participated in preparation and presentation of the new SOS under the leadership of Assistant Superintendent Kim Swain:  Karen Blumberg, Annette Doyle, Holly Estes, Shannon Famigletti, Daniel Garrigan-Byerly, Sara Harvey, Liz Kerrigan, Jennifer LaMontagne, Sharon MacDonald, Jeff Mela, Annie Pumphrey, Chris Reich, Ellen Vedora, and Karen Wolfson.  While these were the people involved in developing and presenting the SOS, their presentation reflects the diligent and dedicated work of all SPS educators, support staff, and administrators.  The presentation highlighted a sample of the work that is currently happening with regard to academics as well as social-emotional learning.  There are some great examples of what exactly this looks like in the classroom and how our students are engaged in learning.  You may view the presentation here:  SOS 2018.

Superintendent Search

The search for your next superintendent is in process.  The Screening Committee will have their first meeting this evening in executive session.  On behalf of the School Committee I thank everyone who participated in the Focus Group sessions offered in December.  The next opportunity for community involvement and feedback will come when finalists are identified.  Until then, the process (as is the case with all administrative searches) remains confidential among the Screening Committee.  For more information on the search please click here

FY19 Budget

The School Committee will continue discussion of the FY19 budget at it’s next meeting on January 22, 2018.  The SPS Budget Hearing with Sudbury Finance Committee will be held on January 25, 2018.  For more information regarding the FY19 budget development process please click here:  FY19 Budget.

Superintendent Chat will be held on January 24, 2018 from 8:30am-9: 30am.  Please stop by at 40 Fairbank Road to share your thinking or ask a question.  I hope to see you!

Respectfully,

Anne
