Dear SPS Families:

Please take note of the following SPS news. I wish you a lovely long weekend with your family!

School Safety

Thank you to everyone who has been supportive of our efforts to enhance front door security at each of our schools! We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we provide additional safety measures for our students and staff.

Based on your feedback and our observations over the past week we have begun to identify areas where we may need to revise current practices and/or procedures. Please understand that this is a "work in progress" and that we will continue to evaluate and revise, as necessary, in order to enhance security while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere at each school. School principals will inform parents regarding school specific issues and I will communicate with you regarding district-wide information. Barring unanticipated glitches, we anticipate installation of new front door security by the end of March.

Calendar for 2013-2014 School Year

At their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 16th, the Sudbury Public Schools School Committee approved the start and end dates for the 2013-2014 school year. The first day for students will be Tuesday, September 3, 2013 and the last day (180th day) of school (without snow days) will be June 18, 2014. The 185th day (if all five snow days are needed) would be June 25, 2014. The final calendar including ILAP days, Back to School Night dates, etc. will be considered for approval by the School Committee in February. One change for the upcoming school year is that one of the two full-day Professional Development days will be moved outside of the school year calendar. This will provide important collaboration time for teachers before the students arrive and also will minimize the disruptions during the school year.

Once approved by the School Committee the 2013-2014 school year calendar will be posted on our website.

Upcoming Coordinated Program Review

We have been informed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of an upcoming Coordinated Program Review in our school system. As part of this Coordinated Program Review, Department staff will visit the district during the week of February 11, 2013. Such visits are routinely conducted by the Department to satisfy federal and state requirements for the periodic review of specific education programs and services in schools throughout the Commonwealth. The Department's Coordinated Program Review will address the following programs: Special Education, Civil Rights, and English Language Learning.
